Seattle’s 77 degrees Thursday was probably the warmest day for the rest of the year

Before we literally say goodbye to summer on Monday, I think summer got in its swan song on Thursday.

Seattle reached 77 degrees under crystal blue skies. Olympia even reached 80, and it got to 82 in Shelton!

Seattle summer, at its finest.

But now it’s as if Nature felt sorry for the rain fans and is quickly apologizing. Sort of like this conversation:

Nature: OH NO! 77 WAS PRETTY WARM THERE, CLOUD FANS! I GOT A LITTLE OVERZEALOUS AND I’M SORRY.

Rain fans: Well, thank you but it’s OK. 77’s not that hot and I think overall we can occasionally manage some warmth and…

Nature: NO – REALLY! I’M NOW BRINGING IN SOME HEAT RELIEF!

Rain fans: Actually, it was pretty nice today and we’re still OK with summer fans getting their sun fix at 77 deg…

Nature: WELL, HOW DOES 73 SOUND? OR EVEN… 68 DEGREES!

Rain fans: Hmm, that does actually sound pretty nice. But really, we’re fine to share…

Nature: AND EVEN SOME GRAY, MORNING CLOUDS!

Rain fans: OooooOOOO….

Nature: WITH AREAS OF DRIZZLE!

Rain fans: (swoon)

Nature: AND IF YOU GO TO THE COAST, I WON’T EVEN LET THE CLOUDS BURN OFF!

Rain fans: (Momentarily ponder what the real estate market might be like in Grays Harbor County…) Wait, no! Many of us live with sun fans. Can we still give them some sun to keep them somewhat happy too? Split the difference?

Nature: HMMM…I SUPPOSE I CAN BRING SUN IN THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING? AND I CAN GIVE THEM A FEW HOURS EACH DAY AROUND 70?

Rain fans: Deal…(but can you sneak in some rain soon? Sun fans have had a lot this summer…)

Nature (waves meteorological wand): THERE, I HID IT OUT AROUND DAY 8-9 ON THE FORECAST. DON’T TELL THE SUN FANS THOUGH.

Rain Fans: Your secret is safe with us. It’s not like it’s on social media.

Indeed we’re going to try to keep both camps happy. Sun fans will get a daily dose of sunshine, and comfortable warmth, if not really quite like sunbathing at Alki Beach weather.

Rain fans will get the first half of the day with gray mornings and while it’s not really supposed to rain for the next several days, will get a nice consolation prize of highs cooling into the upper 60s to low 70s.

Really no change in the forecast for the next 6-7 days, though the long range does in fact indicate maybe some rain toward the end of next week or the weekend after next.

ARE THE 80 DEGREE DAYS DONE IN SEATTLE THIS YEAR?

I kinda think they are. Thursday was our best shot and Seattle came up a few degrees shy, with no indications of temperatures nearing 80 over the next two weeks.

And right now we’re on our way toward the peak of our absolute sprint toward autumn. Right now, the average high temperature in Seattle is dropping 0.3 degrees PER DAY!

By the time we get to the end of the current long range forecast (which goes to about the 1st of October) the average high will have dropped 5 degrees to 66, really putting 80 even farther out of reach.

We have hit 80 in October on rare occasions before so it’s not a TOTALLY done deal. But sun fans…it’s about scraping together what sun you get now.

By the way, this is now looking very likely it will be the first September to fail to hit 80 since 2016.
